GDI Approach

to Making Reproducing Disciples

(Download detailed GDI Approach PDF)

GDI is compelled by the mission that Jesus articulated as His central imperative “MAKE DISCIPLES of all nations.” This is powerfully restated by C. S. Lewis: "The church exists for no other purpose but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became man for no other purpose. It is even doubtful, you know, whether the whole universe was created for any other purpose." - C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, (pp. 163, 169, 170).

Although most pastors and church leaders could identify Jesus’ call to “MAKE DISCIPLES” as the reason the church exists, the astonishing reality is this: When pastors are asked what their plan is for making disciples, the vast majority either have no response or give a recitation of the church programs. The main focus of Global Discipleship Initiative (GDI) is to answer the critical question, "HOW do we makes disciples?"

Knowing the need for a simple, reproducible approach to make disciples, our mission is to transform and multiply disciples through MicroGroups (3s and 4s).

This reproducible and transferable process has been tested with thousands of people for over 40 years around the world. We like to speak of context and content. The MicroGroup experience is the context. It centers on deep, trusting, transparent relationships which creates the ideal environment to transform and multiply disciples.

Into the context we place biblical-based foundational content. When the Word of God is engaged in the context of transparent relationships, that dynamic has the power to make us new in Christ.

We acknowledge that there are many options for how to make disciples, yet the proven success rate of MicroGroups ability to mature and multiply disciples verifies how to make disciples.

There are four environmental conditions that thrive in a MicroGroup that makes for accelerated growth. To clarify, we have labeled these as the Hot Houses of the Holy Spirit

When we….

1) Open hearts in transparent trust to each other;

2) around the truth of God’s Word;

3) in the spirit of life-changing accountability;

4) while engaged in our God-designed mission.

…we are in the Holy Spirit Hot House of Transformation.

The call to make disciples is for every follower of Jesus. Though pastors need to model intentional investment in a few to set the pace, the MicroGroup is for all the people of God. We have found that the ordinary followers of Jesus are capable and thrive as they initiate and lead MicroGroups. When Jesus announced The Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20, that command was to ALL. No seminary degree required. No ceremonial hierarchy is needed.

YOU, as a Christ-follower are commissioned to accept The Great Commission from Jesus Himself!
